Successful start to new season

Cantabrigian Rowing Club made a promising start to the first of three legs of the Cambridge Winter League.

The Intermediate 1 eight of Jimmy Adams, Guy Fiddian, Finn Grimwood, Hannes Dinse, Jonathan McCree-Grey, Andrew Marsden, James King, Hadi Boukhatmihad and cox Sara Russo had their first row together and finished in 9min 5sec, which was 24 seconds clear of second-placed City of Cambridge.

But Cantabs’ top women’s eight were not to be outdone.

They were ninth overall in 10min 7sec, and the fastest women’s crew of the day, leading the Intermediate 2 event by 88 seconds after a challenging race which saw cox Esther Momcilovic calmly steer her crew between two men’s eights in the closing stages of the race.

Cantabs’ other crew were the second fastest women’s eight, winning the Intermediate 3 event by 27 seconds as cox Faye Robertson steered them past Cambridge 99 in the early stages of the race after a crash on the outside of Grassy Corner.

Cantabs’ intermediate women’s squad also had a good race, with their eight finishing fourth fastest women’s crew.

The men’s novice eights was won by Cantabs’ Aquaphones crew, while in the smaller boat classes, Boukhatmi was the fastest of the men’s Intermediate 2 single scullers and Georgie Plunkett was the fastest women’s Intermediate 3 single sculler.
