Cantabrigian seal third place in London League 2NE

By CambridgeIndependent Reporter

Some joy from narrow defeat at Old Cooperians

Cantabrigian earned the point they needed to take third place in London League 2NE, but it was in a 44-36 defeat at Old Cooperians.

The hosts opened the scoring after three minutes, but Cantabs replied through a penalty try to make it 7-7.

A penalty saw Old Cooperians go back in front, however, Cantabs again responded when James Hayward put in Francois Eve to score in the corner to make it 12-10.

David Bloxsum touched down in his final match for Cantabs to extend their lead, but a converted try by Old Cooperians made it 17-17 at half time.

The hosts went ahead at the start of the second half, but Tom Bailey touched down in the corner for Cantabs to earn the bonus point, and Hayward’s conversion made it 24-22.

Bloxsum grabbed a second try and then Jamie Williams seized on some errors to ground the ball by the post, with the conversion making it 36-22 to Cantabs.

However, the visitors then switched off. And four more tries from Old Cooperians, one of which was converted, claimed the victory.

But Cantabs had the point they needed to go one better than last year and finish third.
