Cambridge City bounce back with National League victory away at Cannock
After their defeat last time out, Cambridge City bounced back at the first time of asking in the England Hockey Women’s Conference Midlands with a 4-0 win at Cannock on Saturday.
It was Holly Dean that spearheaded City’s charge to victory in Staffordshire as she helped herself to a hat-trick – with the last of her three goals the most impressive.
Jess Tuff went on to complete the scoring for the visitors, who find themselves just one point adrift of table-topping Loughborough University.
Elsewhere, there was contrasting fortunes for Cambridge City’s two teams in the East Women’s League Premier Division.
While Emily Clapham’s goal could not prevent Cambridge City II from slipping to a 2-1 defeat at Upminster, Cambridge City III ran out 1-0 winners against Norwich City.
Chanre Bond scored the only goal of the encounter for City to seal a result that saw them leapfrog their club-mates.
In the East Women’s League Division 1 North, Cambridge City IV eased to a 5-0 home win at the expense of City of Peterborough II.
Becky Hayward scored a brace for sixth-placed City, with further goals being scored by Anna Nicholson, Robyn Starkie and Eva King.
Xanthe Stebbing starred for Cambridge City V during their 3-3 draw with Pelicans in the East Women’s League 2 North West.
Both of Steph Atkinson’s goals were assisted by Stebbing, who also went on to score herself.
In the East Women’s League Division 3 North West, Eloise Hardy and Sam Surridge were both on target as Cambridge City VI beat visiting Huntingdon & Northstowe 2-1.
It was a much more convincing margin of victory for Cambridge City VII, who won 7-0 against Huntingdon & Northstowe II in the East Women’s League Division 5 North West.
Sarah Appleton (2), Olivia Bevan, Lizzie Kilsby, Emily Herriot, Beth Denny-Gouldson and Hannah Conway bagged the goals for the leaders.
Meanwhile, Cambridge City remain rooted to the foot of the England Hockey Men’s Conference Midlands table after their 1-0 defeat to Banbury.
Cambridge City II fared better in the East Men’s League Division 1 North as they overcome Wisbech Town 3-0 thanks to penalty corner goals from Teddie Clifton, Ben Dudgeon and Pete Liddle.
David Gibson (2), Ben Journeaux, Thomas Liley, Tom Goldsmith and Myles Grimes all scored for Cambridge City III in their 6-0 win over Pelicans II in the East Men’s League Division 3 North West – the same division in which Cambridge City IV beat City of Peterborough V 3-0.
Henry Hodges, Henry Cotton and Oli Ruffle all found the back of the net for City.
A depleted Cambridge City V lost 1-0 to Wisbech Town III in the East Men’s League Division 4 North West, while Cambridge City VI lost 2-1 to Kettering II in the same division.
