Cambridge City Hockey Club’s female and male teams experience contrasting fortunes

The female teams flew the flag for Cambridge City Hockey Club last weekend.

The women’s sides won four of their six outings, while in contrast the six men’s squads all tasted defeats.

Cambridge City are now four points adrift of Repton at the top of the Vitality England Hockey Women’s Midlands Conference table following their surprise 3-2 loss at Beeston.

After Laila Hollis put visiting City ahead, Beeston responded with three goals to put themselves in the ascendancy.

Emily McStea halved the deficit with seven minutes remaining, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation goal.

Elsewhere in the East Women’s League Premier Division, goals from Rachel Burns (2), Fenella Clarke, Ciara Comley and Emily Clapham earned Cambridge City II a 5-2 victory on the road at Broxbourne.

There was also a victory for Cambridge City III in the same division as they triumphed 1-0 at the expense of City of Peterborough.

Chanre Bond scored the only goal of the game to give City some daylight from the relegation zone.

Cambridge City IV are four points off the pace in the East Women’s League Division 2 North West following 2-0 win against City of Peterborough III.

A solo effort from Becky Hayward broke the deadlock before Holly Mulberry’s goal put the outcome beyond doubt.

Sarah Lambert’s goal could not prevent Cambridge City V from slipping to a 2-1 defeat to league-leading St Neots in the same division, while Cambridge City VI cruised to a 4-0 home win against Haverhill in the East Women’s League 4 North West.

Emily Hill got the ball rolling for City with a goal in the opening minute, followed by further strikes from Dalin Li, Lizzie Kilsby and Celia Jones.

In contrast, the men’s teams all tasted defeats as their six games saw a total of 21 goals conceded and just three scored.
