Cambridge City score five goals during big Isthmian League North Division win at Sporting Bengal United

Cambridge City posted a third straight Isthmian League North Division victory thanks to Boxing Day’s 5-0 win at Sporting Bengal United.

The in-form Lilywhites made the journey to the Mile End Stadium having moved away of the bottom four courtesy of back-to-back triumphs at the expense of Grays Athletic and Redbridge.

And the run continued against 18th-placed United with goals from Jamie Dicks, Samrai Gebrai, George Smith, Junior Mubiayi and Ed Tassell.

Manager Jamie Cureton said: “It’s a tough Boxing Day fixture travelling down here and you’re always a bit apprehensive of what team is going to turn up. It’s been Christmas Day and they’re not professional, so you hope they do the right things and that they turn up wanting to perform.

“We changed our style a bit because of the conditions and I’ve just said to them at the end, everything I’ve asked of them, they’ve done. They were superb from start to finish. The goals were good and we defended really well.

“We did what we had to do in the game to win it, so to come away with a big win is outstanding.

This latest victory has moved City up to 11th in the table, 10 points clear of the drop zone and 11 adrift of the play-offs.

However, Cureton has not set any targets heading into 2025, choosing instead to focus on extending the positive run of results – starting on Saturday (28 December) with the visit of Heybridge Swifts.

He added: “We’re always confident when we have everyone together and we have a fully fit group, but we knew in our worst spell with injuries we were playing mainly the top teams.

“We knew when we got everyone back we could potentially put a good run together. We’ve started it in December, which is nice. If you can get on a good run now and kick that on into the new year, we’ll see where we are at.

“We haven’t set any expectations yet with what we feel we can achieve, but if we play like we have been in the last three weeks we’ll win a lot more games – then we’ll see where we end up.”
