Cambridge United to make short journey to face Cambridge City in pre-season friendly at FWD-IP Community Stadium.
Cambridge City will play host to Cambridge United in a pre-season friendly this summer.
The clash, which will take place on Saturday, 5 July, will be the first meeting between the city’s two clubs in seven years.
And the contest will become the highest profile fixture to be played at City’s FWD-IP Community Stadium, which they opened last November after several years of ground-sharing at St Ives Town and Histon.
City chairman Kevin Satchell said: “We’re thrilled to be hosting Cambridge United this summer. It’s more than just a match – it’s a celebration of the footballing links that run deep in this city and the surrounding community.
“With familiar faces like (former City striker) Neil Harris and Mark Bonner involved, it promises to be a fantastic occasion for players and fans alike.”
Meanwhile, from United’s perspective, the encounter is one of four friendlies that have been confirmed ahead of the club’s return to League Two.
They will take on Northampton Town and Cardiff City in behind-closed-doors games on 8 and 18 July respectively, while on 15 July they head to non-league outfit Braintree Town for a match that spectators will be permitted to attend.
The U’s will also face a yet-to-be-confirmed opponent at the Cledara Abbey Stadium on 26 July.
