Cambridge City beat Redbridge in Isthmian League North Division after George Smith’s late winning goal

Leading goalscorer George Smith struck in the 90th minute to earn Cambridge City a 2-1 victory from Saturday’s trip to Redbridge.

The Lilywhites went into the break at the Techsoc.com Stadium with a 1-0 deficit, but two goals after the restart – including Smith’s late intervention – ensured that the three points headed back to Cambridgeshire.

Hosts Redbridge took the lead in the 14th minute when midfielder Oscar Shelvey-Negus’s effort got the better of City goalkeeper James Philp.

Redbridge remained in the ascendancy at half-time, only for City to restore parity in the 63rd minute through Samrai Gebrai, who ended a run of six league appearances without a goal in the process.

And then with the contest seemingly heading towards a score draw, Smith once again showed his clinical touch to wrap up the win for Jamie Cureton’s men.

Thompson has 12 goals this campaign – six more than any of his team-mates – alongside having found the back of the net in each of his last three appearances in the league.

Boss Cureton will now hope that the victory will lead to his side beginning an ascent up the table. They sit 14th with a healthy eight-point gap to the relegation zone, while Walthamstow in 10th are only four points better off.

City are set to travel to Sporting Bengal United on Boxing Day (26 December) before playing host to Heybridge Swifts at the FWD/IP Community Stadium two days later on 28 December.
