Northampton 0-0 Cambridge United: Garry Monk felt U’s deserved to take all three League One points in ‘excellent performance’ at Sixfields
Garry Monk believes that his Cambridge United side deserved all three points from this afternoon’s 0-0 draw at Northampton Town.
With Storm Bert wreaking havoc across the entire 90 minutes at Sixfields, from the little goalmouth action that was created, it was the visiting U’s that carved out the better of the opportunities.
However, they were unable to find a way past Lee Burge and ultimately had to settle for a share of the spoils.
And while he was frustrated not to have taken maximum points, head coach Monk had no complaints with his team’s overall performance in treacherous conditions.
“The conditions dictated it was going to be impossible to be an ultra thrilling game, but I thought we gave an excellent performance away from home in those conditions,” he said.
“For 80 minutes of the game we were the more dominant side in terms of creating opportunities, territory and everything like that – the only thing that was missing today was the ball hitting the back of the net.
“Then on the other side of that, defensively we had to stay solid and do the basics well. We did that throughout the game, even in that period at the end.
“Our performance warranted three points but unfortunately we didn’t take those chances that we had.
“What you do then is make sure you don’t lose the game and take something from it. It’s another clean sheet and another point, albeit we feel like it should have been three.
“But we move on and look to continue that feeling around gaining points, clean sheets and performances.”
The draw, which has left 22nd-placed United four points adrift of safety in the League One standings, has extended the ongoing run of form to one defeat in eight matches in all competitions – during which Monk’s side have kept six clean sheets.
On Tuesday they will play host to a Bolton Wanderers side buoyed by today’s 2-1 win over Blackpool.
