Histon move top of Division One standings after 10-wicket victory over Blunham
Histon (133-0) are the new leaders of the Onyx League Division One following last weekend’s 10-wicket triumph at Blunham.
Ben Leach’s made the trip to Bedfordshire sitting second in the table, 17 points adrift of league-leading Ramsey.
However, with Ramsey slipping to defeat against Burwell & Exning, Histon took full advantage to open up a five-point advantage at the summit.
Having won the toss at Blunham, Histon skipper Leach opted to bowl first – a decision that was vindicated largely by the performance of Oscar Fry.
He chalked up figures of 6-43 from his 13 overs with the ball, while the experienced John Turner weighed in with 2-24 to help bowl the home side out in 42.3 overs.
And it proved to be a straightforward run chase for Histon, who wrapped up their one-sided victory during the 24th over without losing a wicket.
All-rounder Leach contributed an unbeaten 39 runs from 51 deliveries but he very much played the supporting role as fellow opener Fergus Hughes smashed 84 not out. Hughes’ match-winning innings included 12 fours and two maximums, while Leach also found the boundary rope on four occasions.
Histon will now aim to tighten their grip on top spot in the standings on Saturday (3 August) when they play host to fourth-placed Cambridge St Giles.
Meanwhile, Paul Summerskill once again shone with the bat as Burwell & Exning (144-7) won by three wickets at Ramsey (142) on Saturday.
The skipper top scored against the former Onyx League Division One leaders with 47 runs, which takes his season’s tally to 512 – only three batsmen have contributed more runs this term.
His knock came after Ben Kelly had recorded bowling figures of 4-18 to help skittle the home team out in 48.1 overs.
Burwell & Exning, who are sixth, will host Eaton Socon on Saturday (3 August).
Elsewhere, Cambridge St Giles (66) were thrashed by nine wickets at Sawston & Babraham II (70-1).
Alex James (24) was the only St Giles batsman to score double figures, with four others being dismissed for ducks in an innings that lasted just 31 overs.
Sam Thain’s team will look to bounce back at the first time of asking away at new table toppers Histon on Saturday (3 August).
