Magnificent seven are the record-breakers at Cambridgeshire AA Track & Field Championships
Seven records were broken at the Cambridgeshire AA Track & Field Championships in Cambridge.
Athletes from across the county converged on Wilberforce Road to take part in the annual event, and there were some top performances on the track and in the field.
Bottisham-based Ben Snaith smashed the 26-year-old previous record in the 400m.
He clocked 47.48sec to earn victory, bettering the old championship best of 49.3 set by Peteborough’s C Cashell in 1993.
Cambridge & Coleridge AC’s George Keen was in red-hot form in the under-15 boys’ 800m.
He surged to victory in 2min 4.62sec, which was 3.28sec quicker than the county record that was set by Huntingdonshire AC R Youngs in 1982. Runner-up Kai Chilvers, of Nene Valley Harriers, also broke the record by finishing in 2.05.87.
In the same age group, C&C’s Charlie Heal equalled the record time in the 100m.
He crossed the line in 11.61, the same as Joseph Ebanks in 2011.
Matthew Smith, also of C&C, won the under-13 boys’ 800m, breaking a five-year-old record in the process.
He clocked 2.19.03, defeating the 2.23.2 mark of Bedford & County’s C Nicholson in 2014.
On the field, Nene Valley Harriers’ Elizabeth Moorhouse threw a record 12.74m to win the shot put and beat the previous best of 11.90, achieved by Nene Valley’s Tierney Augustine in 2016.
Bedford & County’s Sadie Werrett threw 31.60 to break the under-15 girls’ javelin record.
Cambridge & Coleridge’s Polina Frakina achieved a championship best in the under-13 girls’ long jump.
She leapt out to 4.58m, beating Hunts AC’s Ellie Rhodes mark of 2004 by 1cm.
Meanwhile, Cambridge & Coleridge athletes produced some good performances at the National Road 5k Championships in Ipswich.
Jack Gray was fourth in the senior men’s elite race in a personal best 13.47, with Belgrave’s Nick Goolab winning in 13.34.
C&C clubmates Jonathan Escalante-Phillips (14.13) and Norman Shreeve (14:19) were not far behind.
In the women’s race, Holly Archer clocked 16.04, Vicky Knight timed 16.51 and Charlotte Christensen finished in 16.59 as Olympian Laura Weightman won in 15.22.
Thomas Keen opened his outdoor season with a UK under-20 leading time of 3min 48.48sec at the BMC Gold Standard Races, while Julia Paternain tops the European under-23 10,000m rankings and is second in the 5,000m.
