Cambridge City continue positive Isthmian League North Division form with 3-2 win at Wroxham
Cambridge City continued their recent run of positive Isthmian League North Division form with a 3-2 victory at Wroxham last night.
No side in the league can better the Lilywhites’ return of 16 points from their previous six outings – with the latest win coming courtesy of defender Jayden Gipson’s goal nine minutes from time.
Earlier in the contest City had twice taken the lead at Trafford Park through recent arrival Ramiah Mills and a Harvey Peters own goal, but a pair of penalties – scored by Wroxham’s Ryan Miles and Ryan Hawkins –pegged them back.
“Overall we’re happy with the result. We knew it was going to be a tough place to come to with the weather and the pitch,” said City boss Jamie Cureton.
“For us it was more about the result than the overall performance, but I thought we did well considering they only had two or three shots – and two of them were penalties.
“The boys battled well and scored three good goals, so to come away with three points, I cannot ask for much more at the moment.
“We set out a gameplan and stuck to it. Ultimately today was about coming away with three points – that was my only message.
“We wanted to stay on our good run and if we want to keep moving up the league then you’ve got to come to these tough places and walk away with three points.”
The trip to Norfolk also marked a debut for Sam Carter, who joined the club over the weekend from fellow North Division outfit Tilbury.
And the midfielder made a big impression on Cureton, who added: “I thought he played very well. He was calm on the ball, he picks up good areas defensively and his distribution was very good.
“Sam hasn’t trained with us because we haven’t been able to train due to so many games, but it’s important when you’ve got new players, you want to get them in as soon as possible.
“His debut was outstanding. He added a lot to us and gives us a lot of strength in midfield. We’ve got some really, really good players in the centre of the park and they all offer us different things.”
Tenth-placed City will travel to face bottom-of-the-table Ipswich Wanderers on Saturday (11 January).
