Danny Richards gets hat-trick as Cantabrigian get first win of the season
Danny Richards’ hat-trick of tries helped Cantabrigian register their first win of the season, with a 19-18 victory over Wymondham in London League 2NE.
They opened the scoring in the 24th minute. A scrum seven metres out was driven over the line, and Richards dotted down at the back of the pack. Finlay Laing added the conversion.
It remained 7-0 at half time, but the visitors made all the running at the start of the second period.
Wymondham’s left winger touched down in the corner, and they then added a penalty to make it 8-7.
Another penalty from the visitors saw them extend their lead to 11-7.
Cantabs were under constant pressure, and another converted try saw them trail 18-7 with 15 minutes remaining.
A driving maul was set up by Cantabs, and Richards finished off the move for his second try as they reduced the deficit to six points.
In the closing stages, a six-metre scrum saw Cantabs drive over the line and Richards applied the finishing touch for his hat-trick. Laing then landed the conversion to seal Cantabs’ one-point win.
Cantabs are away to Wanstead this Saturday (October 23).
