Dave Bennett scored the only goal of the game as Cambridge Nomads defeated Cambridge South in East Men’s League, Division One.

South made the stronger start and dominated the first 15 minutes, forcing Nomads to soak up considerable pressure.

As the breakthrough did not materialise, Nomads grew in confidence to force a series of well-defended short corners.

The goal arrived midway through the second half as a well-worked dummied short corner saw Bennett deflect Sam Walker-Farrant’s cross from the left past South man-of-the-match Chris Watson.

South could not break down the home defence, with Harry Lewis’ strike disallowed for an earlier infringement.

South II were pegged back to a 3-3 draw with St Ives II in 3NW.

Man-of-the-match Jim Hockley had volleyed South in front, only for St Ives to equalise minutes later.

Tom Marchant got his first goal for South before the break, and Jack Chalk got a third early in the second half. However, they were caught twice on the counter-attack in the last 10 minutes to be held to a draw.

Sharper play in the final third was the difference as South III won 3-1 against Nomads II in 4NW.

A slow start from Nomads led to Rob Hartle bursting in from the left to fire over the keeper for the first goal, and man-of-the-match Jimmy Wood created the second with a mazy run for Nev Warren to feed Peter Creed to score.

Ed Boggis slapped home a loose ball to make it 3-0. Paul Matthews got a late consolation for Nomads from a penalty corner.

Two defensive errors nullified Oli Weston’s strike as South IV lost 2-1 at St Neots II in 5NW.

South V fielded a number of under-16s in their 4-2 defeat to City of Peterborough VII in 6NW (S).

Standout performers among the youngsters were Thomas Grove, whose perceptive runs made him an outlet on the wing, and Brandon Ta, who showed excellent energy and marking in a holding midfield role.

Keeper Jo Dant was man of the match, while South’s goals were scored by Simon Ta.

Two goals from Zinny Longson helped Nomads III to a 3-2 win over St Ives IV, with the winner coming from a diving Bertie Peck after a good run from Tom Harris.

Gareth Andrew scored for Cambridge City as their England Men’s Hockey League, Conference East season started with a 4-1 defeat at St Albans.
