Cambridge City beat Ipswich Wanderers 2-1 in Isthmian League North Division thanks to Jayden Gipson header

For the second away game in succession a late goal from defender Jayden Gipson earned Cambridge City all three points last night.

After falling behind early on at bottom-of-the-table Ipswich Wanderers to an Ashley Blow goal, City went into the break level when Ramiah Mills equalised from close range in first-half stoppage time.

And the 2-1 victory was sealed three minutes from time when Gipson, who bagged the winner against Wroxham last time out, rose highest to head beyond Wanderers goalkeeper Warren Burwood.

“It was tough. When you play teams down the bottom I find it to be harder because they’ve got a lot to fight and scrap for,” City boss Jamie Cureton told the club’s YouTube channel.

“But the boys have come here, dug in, gone one down against the run of play and they’ve kept going and going.

“That’s the position we’re in at the moment where we never give up. We’re full of confidence, we were more aggressive with and without the ball once we went one behind and kept pressing.

“The boys at half-time were quite geed up, I didn’t have to do too much. We got some good opportunities, their goalkeeper has made some good saves and then we score from a set-piece again. It’s not a bad habit, scoring from set-pieces. Anyone at any level football knows that can win you games (like that) and it’s come up trumps again.”

The win in Suffolk has moved the Lilywhites, who are unbeaten in their last seven outings (six victories), up to ninth in the Isthmian League North Division standings.

And the gap to the play-off positions is down to just six points, although Cureton believes that it is ‘too early’ to be focused on a push for the top five.

He added: “It’s every game as it comes. I said to group at the start of December that if they could put a good run together we’ll see where we’re at.

“That’s all we’re doing, approaching every game and trying to win it. Then we’ll see what happens with other results and see where we are.

“It’s still a bit too early and there’s still lots of games to go. There’s some good sides above us that keep winning as well so we’ll just keep our heads down and keep performing every week.

“If come five or six games (left of the season) we’re still in a strong position then yes, it might get mentioned. The group are quite grounded, they understand there’s a lot of hard work to be done.”

City will play host to 19th-placed Haringey Borough on Saturday (18 January).
