Cambridge United defender Jubril Okedina could remain at the club despite being placed on transfer list

Jubril Okedina could still have a future at Cambridge United.

The centre-back was transfer listed at the end of the previous campaign alongside Jack Lankester, Adam May and Lewis Simper.

Those three players have since all headed for pastures new, but Okedina is still at the club and has featured throughout pre-season.

And with fellow defender Mamadou Jobe suffering a long-term injury at the start of the summer, it would appear that there is now potential for Okedina to stay at the Cledara Abbey Staidum.

The 23-year-old, who joined the U’s on a permanent basis in 2021 from Tottenham Hotspur, has certainly impressed head coach Garry Monk with the way that he has conducted himself in recent weeks.

Monk said: “When the situation is like that, my view is that the door is never closed. It’s just the situation and how you see it at the time, but things happen in football.

“Jibs has been brilliant since he came back in – his attitude, the way he’s gone about it.

“He’s done well in the games, done well in training and I’ve got no issues with him being here.

“It’s part of football. I’ve been in the same situation (as a player) where I’ve been told I can leave the club if I want to and stuff like that.

“Then you’ve got a decision to make and ultimately it’s often the player that will make the decision. Some will accept it and some will say ‘no, I’m going to roll my sleeves up and prove a point’. So far this pre-season that has been Jib’s attitude. He’s come back in fit and at it.

“Whenever things like that come along and a manager makes a decision, it’s never with the intention of fully closing that door. Often players will see it like that, but some will not be ready to accept it.

“As I say, you never know what’s going to happen in football and he’s been fantastic since he came back in.

Okedina has made more than 100 appearances for United in all competitions.
