Cambridge boxer Demie-Jade Resztan guaranteed EUBC Women's European Championship medal after victory over Ayse Cagirir

Cambridghe fighter Demie-Jade Resztan became the first member of the Great Britain boxing squad to secure a medal at this year’s 2022 EUBC Women’s European Championship following a quarter-final victory in Montenegro on Tuesday.

With a bronze medal at least guaranteed, it is now the second time the New Astley Boxing Club-trained minimum-weight has earned herself a European medal having picked up silver in Alcobendas, Spain back in 2019.

As the only member of the British squad to compete on day five of action in Budva, Resztan took on Ayse Cagirir of Turkey for a place in the semi-final.

The 25-year-old dominated the opening exchanges in the first round, and despite a second-round fight back from Cagirir, the experience of the boxer from Cambridge shone through to hand her victory – her second in as many days – via a 4:1 split decision.

She will now face Roberta Bonatti tomorrow with a gold medal still very much up for grabs.

Speaking prior to the tournament getting under way, Resztan said: “(You’ve) just got to keep believing and pushing through like I did before.

“All of the hard work is done now so all you need to do is relax, enjoy it and perform.”

Her upcoming Italian opponent reached this stage thanks to a unanimous decision victory at the expense of Spain’s Marta Lopez Del Arbol.
