Goalkeeper makes U's move from Charlton

Dimitar Mitov has arrived at Cambridge United to mark the completion of the first phase of their summer transfer window.

The 20-year-old goalkeeper has joined on a two-year deal from Charlton Athletic.

The Bulgarian had four years in the youth ranks at Charlton Athletic, featuring regularly in the under-18, under-21 and under-23 squads, and has also gained valuable experience on the international stage, captaining his national side’s under-17 and under-19 teams.

“When I came to meet the staff at the club, I was made to feel very welcome and they convinced me that this was the right club,” said Mitov.

“I can take plenty of experience from my time at Charlton as I spent a lot of time around the first team there, as well as learning a lot from playing in the younger ages such as the under-23s.

“I’ve also played for Bulgaria at every age level between under-16s and under-21s, and it has been a brilliant experience to play competitively for World Cups and Euros.

“It’s great to be signing for Cambridge United, a Football League club which I can see will only help to improve my career.

“I’m really happy to get this over the line and I just want pre-season to start now.”

Mitov will provide competition for U’s No 1 Will Norris, and head coach Shaun Derry said: “We all feel Dimitar has the major characteristics to progress his career here at Cambridge United.

“Physically and technically he has all the key ingredients to become a very good goalkeeper.

“Working with Kevin Pilkington (the goalkeeping coach) and Will Norris everyday will no doubt bring his game to a whole new level.”

And head of football operations Ben Strang said: “It was important for us to bring a goalkeeper that has the potential to challenge Will for the jersey. Dimitar has an obvious drive and ambition to do that.

“The staff at Charlton speak very well of his capabilities and character.

“It is a vital transition though now for Dimitar to leave predominantly an under-23 environment and come into a competitive first team environment.

“He has good pedigree and many excellent attributes that will provide Kevin Pilkington with a really interesting project alongside the continued development of Will Norris.”

He added: “This signing concludes the first phase of our recruitment in this window. I am thrilled that we have been able to secure the signings of our genuine first-choice targets in each of the highlighted positions.

“We now have the foundations of a strong squad before the players return for pre-season training on June 26.”
