Ely & Chesterton lose 5-4 on aggregate to Uttigen in WSE Female Champions League qualifier

Ely & Chesterton United just came up short in their bid to reach the group stages of the WSE Female Champions League.

Trailing 2-1 to opponents Uttigen from the first leg, the young Ely & Chesterton side travelled to Switzerland at the weekend aware that a two-goal margin of victory was required to advance beyond the qualifying phase of the competition.

But as it was they played out a 3-3 draw, meaning that they lost out 5-4 on aggregate.

Ely & Chesterton fell a goal behind inside the opening 60 seconds and Uttigen went on to double their lead via a penalty.

Nevertheless, the away side stuck to their task and they went into the break level courtesy of goals from Izzy Jansen-Bahtti and Gemma Cannizzo.

Uttigen edged back in front against the run of play during the second half, but with 16 seconds remaining Ely & Chesterton equalised through Leah Isaacson’s penalty.

However, it is not the end of the team’s European journey because they will now take on Italian side Valdagno in the World Skate European Cup in February next year.
