Histon suffered a 2-0 defeat to Yaxley in their Pitching In Northern Premier League, Midlands Division basement battle.

The Stutes went into the match knowing that a win would lift them level on points with their opponents, but the Cuckoos were able to capitalise on a couple of errors to leave Bridge Road with all the win.

Histon made the faster start, taking the game to the visitors.

Josh Dawkin looked to have got onto Andy Ballester's pass, but having taken the ball on his chest, Yaxley keeper Arron Butcher was out quickly to clear.

Luke Lindsay burst through from deep only to also be thwarted by Butcher.

Despite the hosts having had the majority of possession, Yaxley delivered a brutal blow in the 21st minute.

An error by Pat Bexfield, who got injured in the process, let in Matt Sparrow to burst into the area to beat Histon keeper Sam Roach at his near post.

A shot on the turn by the dangerous Harmeed Ishola flashed across the face of goal, and Thomas Waumsley's attempt from the edge of the area was easily held by the keeper.

There was a vital block by Ballester for Histon in the 36th minute as they failed to track their runners and Ishola's was saved down low at the front post by Roach in the 41st minute.

Histon really should have gone into half time on level terms.

Dawkin got in behind the defence and the keeper was in no man's land, but Kyle Rowell cleared off the line. In the next passage of play, Ballester's cross was met by the unmarked Ed Rolph in the six-yard box but his header was saved by Butcher.

As they went into the break trailing, it felt that if Histon could get back on level terms, then the game was there for the taking.

The problem was that they failed to trouble Butcher.

Sparrow thought he had got a second for Yaxley only to be flagged offside in the 62nd minute, and Histon's first half-chance of note was a header wide by Rhys Thorpe, from Rolph's flick on.

Waumsley struck a falling ball wide in the 72nd minute, and Roach did well to turn behind Daniel Cotton's attempt across goal.

But the keeper was unable to claim the subsequent corner, and it dropped at the feet of Ross Watson to fire into the top corner for Yaxley's second goal.

The closest Histon went to getting on the mark in the closing stages was a header over from Ollie Brookes in the 90th minute, as their struggles to pick up points continue this season.
