Cambridge City Hockey Club’s teams deliver five victories from last weekend’s round of National and East League fixtures
Just five Cambridge City teams returned victories during a tough return to National and East League action at the weekend.
In the England Hockey Women’s Conference Midlands, Cambridge City suffered a 4-2 defeat away at fellow title challengers Loughborough University.
It was a match in which the fitness and finesse of the students proved to be decisive as they opened up a healthy advantage.
Holly Dean and Mily Wych went on to pull late goals back for City, but by that point the damage had long been done.
Elsewhere, Cambridge City II and Cambridge City III both lost their respective East Women’s League Premier Division encounters without scoring.
The second team went down to a 2-0 defat at Bury St Edmunds, while the thirds were on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline against Norwich Dragons.
Cambridge City IV dropped down to fourth in the East Women’s League Division 1 North following their 4-0 defeat to a clinical Cambridge University II side.
In the East Women’s League Division 2 North West, Cambridge City V played out a 2-2 draw during their trip to Newmarket.
Goals from Steph Atkinson and Alice Beardmore put visiting City into a commanding position but it was one of their former players – Minnie Eve – that halved the deficit before Newmarket struck an equaliser to share the spoils.
It was also honours even for Cambridge City VI during their clash at home with St Neots II.
Eloise Hardy was on target for City during the East Women’s League Division 3 North West encounter, which ended level at 1-1.
The club’s only female side to taste victory was Cambridge City VII, who ran out convincing 6-0 winners at home against Newmarket III.
Hattie Emerson’s hat-trick was accompanied by goals from Natahsa Blatcher, Lizzie Kilsby and Catriona Smith.
In the England Hockey Men’s Conference Midlands, Cambridge City’s poor start to the season continued with a 2-0 defeat at Norwich City.
The loss has left City rooted to the foot of the table with just one point from their opening six fixtures.
Cambridge City II chalked up a 4-0 win at the expense of City of Peterborough II in the East Men’s League Division 1 North.
Two goals apiece from Cammy Small and Ben Dudgeon secured the three points for the promotion contenders.
In the East Men’s League Division 4 North West, Cambridge City V edged out hosting Kettering II 2-1.
After falling behind, Streeteja Jonnada drew City level before Tom Hill struck what proved to be the winning goal with 12 minutes remaining.
And in the same division two early goals from Simon Webb set Cambridge City VI on their way to a 5-2 win at the expense of Spalding III.
Further goals from Tony Bass and Will Earl added to City’s lead and while Spalding scored two of their own against the run of play, Webb made sure of the outcome when he completed his hat-trick.
