Cambridge United 0-2 Derby County: Five key talking points from the Rams' Sky Bet League One victory at the Abbey Stadium

Sports editor Liam Apicella takes a look at some of the biggest talking points from Cambridge United’s 2-0 defeat to Derby County yesterday afternoon.

1. Bonner stays at home

We will probably never know just how close he came to leaving but was it not great to see Mark Bonner on the touchline at the Abbey Stadium?!

It is no secret that the United head coach was wanted by Rotherham United, yet he decided his future is best served by staying with his boyhood club.

Result aside, it felt a significant moment that he was the man sending the U's out to battle.

2. Turning off the tap

One major cause of concern for Bonner is bound to be the goals against column.

Derby's two goals took the total United have conceded this term to 18 – only the bottom four have shipped more.

Half of those goals have also been leaked at the Abbey, including five in the last two home outings.

3. Holding your hands up

Bonner was quite right after the final whistle when he pointed out the quality that exists within the Derby ranks.

They had three players away on senior international duty last week and a number of the squad have previous Premier League experience.

There will always be things you could have done better in a game of football but sometimes you just have to accept that the opposition are stronger.

4. Bouncing back

There is a fair chance Zeno Ibsen-Rossi will not have had the best night’s sleep.

The centre-back will not need anyone tell him that he should have done better in the lead up to James Collins’ first goal, but now it is all about how he reacts to the setback.

Bonner has backed the summer signing from AFC Bournemouth to respond in a positive manner, and the next few games will certainly be a test of his resolve.

5. It does not get any easier

After a defeat on a Saturday the last place you would want to travel to try to get back on the winning trail three days later is Ipswich Town but that is the cards United have been dealt.

The match was scheduled for the weekend that all football was cancelled following the death of The Queen, but it has now been rearranged for Tuesday evening.

With just one defeat and the most number of goals scored in League One so far this season, the Tractor Boys will almost certainly provide the sternest of tests at Portman Road.

Having said that, Bonner's men did win there last year!
