South Cambs Schools Sports Partnership hosts another successful annual Quicksticks Hockey Competition at Cambridge University Sports Ground

Forty teams competed at the South Cambs School Sports Partnership annual Year 5/6 Quicksticks Hockey competition.

Last week’s event, which was held at the University Sports Ground on Wilberforce Road, was split into ‘Big Schools’ and ‘Small Schools’ tournaments based on pupil numbers.

In the morning, 20 teams from 11 big schools featured in Cup and Plate formats with matches lasting 10 minutes and sides containing four players made up of two boys and two girls.

In a repeat of last year’s Cup final, Histon Brook took on the University of Cambridge Primary School and ran out 2-1 winners, while in the Plate final Pendragon recorded a 3-0 victory at the expense of Trumpington Park.

Meanwhile, the small schools’ Cup final was contested between Harston and Newton and Meldreth, both of whom had won all of their group matches.

And it was Harston and Newton that came out on top thanks to 2-1 victory.

But perhaps the stand-out performers on the day were Barton, who qualified for the Plate final by winning all four of their group fixtures, scoring 23 goals in the process.

They met Great Abington in the final after they advanced on a coin toss having drawn level on points and goal difference with Harston and Newton II, with Barton firing in another six unanswered goals to secure the top prize.
