Cambridge United sign EFL Trophy winner Elias Kachunga following departure from Bolton Wanderers

With the opening day of the new Sky Bet League One season fast approaching, Elias Kachunga has become Cambridge United’s sixth signing of the summer.

The German forward arrives at the Abbey Stadium with a wealth of experience, both from his homeland and also in the English Premier League during a successful stint at Huddersfield Town.

After starting out in Germany’s top flight with Borussia Mönchengladbach, the 31-year-old went on to have spells at SC Paderborn and FC Ingolstadt before he joined Huddersfield on loan in August 2016.

Kachunga’s return of 12 goals that season helped to fire the Terriers into the Premier Leaguer and he went on to spend two further campaigns with the Yorkshire club prior to linking up with Sheffield Wednesday and more recently Botlon Wanderers.

The former Germany Under-21 international scored four goals for Wanderers last term, including one in the EFL Trophy final victory over Plymouth Argyle at Wembley.

Upon putting pen to paper on a one-year deal with United, Kachunga said: “I am really excited to be here. I had good talks with the gaffer, he explained what he wants to do moving forward with the club and I was really interested in this project.

“I just had the feeling it is the right place to be right now. I am feeling good, the season is almost here and I am just excited to get started and get back on the pitch.”

Head coach Mark Bonner added. “I am delighted to welcome Elias to the club. He is a player of excellent pedigree who has played a lot of football at a higher level.

“Last season he was part of a strong Bolton Wanderers team and played 50 games in all competitions. He will complement our existing options in the attacking area of the pitch and can play anywhere across the front line.

“We have received nothing but positive character references in our work to sign Elias and once we get him up to speed, I have no doubt he will play a big role in helping us achieve our objectives this season.”
