Cambridge City men's first team keep up positive start to new England Hockey season

Cambridge City continue to march on in the England Hockey Men’s Division 1 North following Saturday’s 4-1 home victory over Deeside Ramblers.

It is now three wins in a row for Grant Gilmour’s side, who are one of five teams locked on nine points at the top of the division after four matches.

Hosting City were the dominant force from the off but it was not until the second quarter that they started to make it count.

Their opening goal came courtesy of the in-form Conor Annand, who applied the finishing touch from a rebound after skipper Nat Farrant had seen his effort hit the post.

And within a couple of minutes City doubled their via Tom Spreckley’s low flick from a penalty corner won by Adam Price.

The home team continued to create a number of opportunities but it was not until the 61st minute that they made it 3-0 when Farrant fired in following a solo run from the halfway line.

Visiting Deeside pulled a goal back in the 69th minute but any hopes of a dramatic comeback were extinguished 60 seconds later by Annand’s second goal of the game.

The team take a break from action this weekend before returning to the pitch on Sunday, October 30 away at Bowdon, who have also won three of their four matches this term.

Elsewhere, goals from Alex Johnson and Gerrit Farren could not prevent Cambridge City II from losing 3-2 to Saffron Walden in the East Men’s League Premier Division, whereas Cambridge City Men’s III were on the right end of a 4-3 scoreline against Cambridge Nomads I in the East Men’s League Division 1N.

Goals from Marc Roca and Rupert Evans put City in the ascendancy before Nomads fought back.

However, a deflected cross from David Gibson and Nick Jerman struck home in open play to seal the victory for the home side.

Meanwhile, the inter-club match between Cambridge City IV and Cambridge City Veterans in the East Men’s League Division 2NW ended level at 2-2.

Simeon Conway-Jones and Barnaby Warr were on target for the fourth side and Mark Moffat and Nick Hurd netted for the veterans.

In the East Men’s League Division 4NW, Cambridge City V ran out 6-0 winners over March Town II.

Niall Graham opened the scoring within 10 minutes, with further goals from Alex Herriott and Maxim Vreeswijk making it 3-0 at half-time.

A deflection off Oscar Bray accounted for City’s fourth before Tom Goldsmith and Streeteja Jonnada completed the scoring.

Cambridge Men’s VI also enjoyed a victory, running out 1-0 winners over Cambridge Nomads III courtesy of Ben Journeaux’s goal.

In the Vitality Women’s Division 1 South, Cambridge remain the only side without a point to their name following a 6-1 defeat at league-leading Isca & University of Exeter.
