Midfield man strikes to earn U's a point

George Maris struck to earn Cambridge United a 1-1 draw at Carlisle United in Sky Bet League Two.

Carlisle were the latest in a string of opponents for the U’s chasing promotion, and it was the hosts who made a brighter opening, forcing saves from keeper David Forde.

Forde produced another top save before half time, denying Richie Bennett.

But the Carlisle striker broke the deadlock at the start of the second half, when Jamie Devitt’s cross was diverted across goal for Bennett to tap in.

However, United responded immediately as Maris headed in after Jabo Ibehre’s header back across goal.

The game began to open up, and Jevani Brown had a shot blocked by a Carlisle defender, while Maris went close to a second.

Forde was on hand twice to thwart Carlisle late on as the U’s gained a hard-earned point.

United are at home to Crawley Town on Good Friday, kick off 3pm, and travel to Morecambe on Easter Monday, kick off 3pm.
