Former Chelsea and Cambridge United youngster Marcel Lewis scores on debut in Cambridge City’s win over Gorleston
Marcel Lewis marked his Cambridge City debut with a goal during this afternoon’s 2-0 home win over Gorleston.
The attacking midfielder, who spent time in the youth ranks at Cambridge United and Chelsea before signing a two-year professional contract with Burnley in 2022, completed his move to the Lilywhites earlier this week.
And the 23-year-old made an instant impression in a City shirt with a goal in the 52nd minute.
Jamie Cureton’s side were already 1-0 up at that point thanks to Jayden Gipson, who broke the deadlock seven minutes before the break.
The victory has moved City up to 12th in the Isthmian League North Division table ahead of Tuesday night’s home encounter against sixth-placed Felixstowe & Walton United.
“The clean sheet is the biggest thing for us, we haven’t had too many,” Cureton told the club’s social media channels.
“Seeing the game out has been another of our Achilles heels – we’ve lost a lot of games late on when we’ve been winning.
“Those are the two most pleasing things. I thought we looked quite comfortable in the game, but how things have gone recently for us, we’ve lost late and you always feel a bit nervy.
“There was a spell in the second half where we got a bit nervy but they didn’t cause many problems and we came through that phase.”
On more of a negative note, Cureton went on to reveal that attacker Jack Thompson will miss the next four to six weeks with a torn hamstring.
