Cambridge United goalkeeper Jack Stevens ‘loving life’ at the Abbey Stadium following summer switch from Oxford United.

Jack Stevens has revealed that he is ‘loving life’ at Cambridge United.

The goalkeeper arrived at the Abbey Stadium during the summer from fellow Sky Bet League One club Oxford United.

And aside from an injury that sidelined him for a few weeks, Stevens has enjoyed a positive start to his career between the posts at Cambridge, keeping six of the eight league clean sheets that is a high in England’s top four divisions.

“I couldn’t really have asked for a better start, especially the first game of the season (against former club Oxford, 2-0 win) – that was a big one for me,” he said.

“I unfortunately got the injury that kept me out for a while but I’ve come back in and the lads in front of me have been so solid.

“Since I joined it’s been great. All of the lads, all of the staff - everyone has made me feel so welcome.

“It’s nice to have a permanent home and somewhere where I feel really valued and a big part of something.

“I’m really happy here and I’ve moved down. It’s a permanent base and I’m loving life here.”

Stevens attributes the impressive number of shut-outs - Will Mannion kept goal for the other two - down to the work that has been done on the training ground.

The defence in front of him has also been a consistent presence, with centre-backs Michael Morrison and Ryan Bennett - along with full-backs Danny Andrew and Liam Bennett - featuring in all 16 league matches to date.

He added: “We’ve got good experience in the two centre-halves. They’ve played a lot of games at a very high level and that helps me out a lot as well.

“We work on it in training. We’re constantly working on our defensive shape and our defensive unit. It gives us a really good solid base.

“And then it’s just that determination to keep the ball out of the net. The lads in front of me are making great blocks and they’re so well organised.

“It’s about keeping that going, keeping that consistency and knowing that if we do our job, hopefully we start taking more chances at the other end and we’ll come out with a few more wins.”

The 26-year-old would, of course, love to add another clean sheet to his tally at London Road tomorrow lunchtime when Cambridge United make the short journey to face rivals Peterborough United.

“It’s massive, especially for the fans. These are the sort of games you look at when the fixtures come out,” he said.

“A derby day away from home, if you can come out with a win there, I don’t think the fans will be forgetting about that any time soon.

“That’s what we’ll be going there trying to do and hopefully we can give the fans a day to remember.”
