Cambridge United set to recall full-back Liam Bennett from loan spell at Walsall

Cambridge United head coach Mark Bonner has revealed that there is a ‘good chance’ Liam Bennett will return from his loan spell at Walsall in the near future.

The young full-back joined the Sky Bet League Two Saddlers on a season-long deal during the summer, but the U’s have the option to recall him during the January transfer window.

And with injuries starting to mount up in defence – coupled with the former AFC Sudbury player impressing during his 24 appearances so far this term – Bonner is now likely to exercise that option.

“There’s a good chance of (recalling Bennett). We’ll see where we are after tomorrow’s game (against Derby County), but there’s a good chance of that,” he said.

As well as Bennett heading back, the boss is also hopeful of adding further new recruits to his squad next month.

He added: “The other bits and pieces probably don’t change too much of what we were thinking anyway.

“We will look to add and if we can get one or two in before Bristol Rovers (on January 7) that would be great because it will give everyone a boost.

“We’ll get these two games (Derby and Sheffield Wednesday on Monday) out of the way first of all and then we’ll see where we are.”

One player that is set to leave the club on a temporary basis is forward Glenn McConnell, who will shortly join Vanarama National League South outfit St Albans City on loan.

The Republic of Ireland youth international, who recently scored four goals in the 6-0 FA Youth Cup win at Colchester United, was on the bench for the Boxing Day victory over Shrewsbury Town.

Bonner said: “He’ll be going to St Albans and playing there, which will be really good for him.

“We look forward to seeing how he does and he’ll join Mamadou (Jobe) there, who has gone to play.

“Some of those boys are doing well at the moment on loan, which is good for them.

“Their game time is going to be really limited here. We’ve got to get through the next game or two and we’ll add to our squad and a few of the injured boys will be back soon so we’re fairly comfortable with that.”
