Colchester United 1-2 Cambridge United match report: Goals from James Brophy and Mamadou Jobe earn U’s all three points in League Two clash at JobServe Community Stadium

Cambridge United came from behind to win 2-1 in their League Two clash at Colchester United this evening.

Visiting Cambridge found themselves behind early on at the Jobserve Community Stadium, but two goals in rapid succession right at the end of the first half proved to be decisive as Neil Harris’ side racked up their first away league win of the new campaign.

Having trailed for much of the opening 45 minutes, Harris’ half-time team talk in the Cambridge dressing room certainly became a lot easier.

After a third-minute effort from James Brophy was saved by Colchester goalkeeper Matt Macey, the home side broke the deadlock in the 13th minute.

Arthur Read was afforded too much time around the edge of the box and he picked his spot with a low drive that got the better of Jake Eastwood in the Cambridge goal.

It took Cambridge a little while to respond to the setback, but once they did it was emphatic. In the 45th minute Brophy’s free-kick from 25 yards took a deflection off the Colchester wall to beat Macey and within a couple of minutes the scoreline had been flipped on its head when Mamadou Jobe got up at the back post to head home Sullay Kaikai’s inswinging free-kick from the right.

Colchester boss Danny Cowley shuffled his pack throughout the second half in a bid to find a route back into the contest, but the visitors showed the sort of resilience and mentality that their head coach had demanded after his side had been pegged back during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Harrogate Town.

They came closest to an equaliser two minutes from time when Colchester right-back Rob Hunt rose highest at the back post, but his header drifted wide of the near post, while in stoppage time substitute Jaden Williams’ flicked effort was turned behind by Eastwood.
