Harry Chalk at the double for Cambridge South in Pelicans win
South make winning start to new year
Harry Chalk grabbed two goals as Cambridge South secured a 4-1 triumph over Pelicans in East Men's League, Division Two.
The first team braved the adverse weather and despite a yellow card for Chris Pearson were able to seal victory.
Jim Hockley and Mark Williams added goals to Chalk's double to help South consolidate their mid-table position and pull clear of the chasing relegation pack.
Cambridge South II avenged their season-opening defeat to Wellingborough by earning a 3-0 victory against their under-strength opponents in 4NW.
The extra space on the pitch gave South lots of room and led to James Menzies opening the scoring.
An error in defence gave Shin Kim the chance to make it 2-0, and then Wellingborough adopted an industrial approach to clearing the ball in defence.
But John Pawson scored late on to complete the win and maintain South's push for top spot.
Cambridge Nomads secured a 4-1 win at Peterborough VI in 4NW.
Captain Arthur Meadows scored a hat-trick and centre-back Dave Spence stepped forward to put away a penalty stroke.
Cambridge South III stumbled slightly in their 5NW promotion push as they lost 3-1 to Bourne Deeping IV.
The hosts looked the stronger side throughout taking the lead from a penalty corner only to be pegged back by Jack Chalk's equaliser for South.
But an injury to South defender Neil Sneade and increased pressure from Bourne saw the visitors concede two late goals as they slumped to their first defeat since the start of November.
Cambridge Nomads III clinched a 2-1 win at St Ives IV in 6NW (S).
Mel Ragnauth chipped the keeper for the opener, but with Phil Jones tapping it home on the line it is not known who is taking credit for the goal.
Zinny Longson then scored in the bottom corner to put Nomads 2-1 up to set up an end-to-end finish, as a few chances went wide as Nomads secured victory.
In a friendly match, Cambridge South IV hosted their fifth-team counterparts, and it ended with a 2-1 win for the V side, thanks to goals from Rupert Espley and Ben Williamson. Simon Frampton replied for South IV.
The two South teams in East Women's League, Division 4NW (S) did battle this week, and in what was a one-sided affair, South II triumphed 12-0 against South III.
There were nine goals in the first half, but South III rallied in the second to keep the score down.
Man-of-the-match Hazel Polge, Izzy Macdonald-Parry and Kendra Seed all scored hat-tricks, Lauren Brown notched a double and Katie Gibson scored one.
It keeps the seconds in the running for top of the table, and consigns the thirds to bottom spot.
