Stutes maintain lead at the top of the table

Captain Max York opened the scoring for Histon as the Thurlow Nunn League, Premier Division leaders earned a 3-0 win over FC Clacton.

York headed in his 13th of the season in the 24th minute, and it was added to by efforts from Ed Rolph and Danny Gould as the Stutes dominated against a physically strong Clacton side that looked threatening on the counter attack.

Histon controlled territory and possession in the first half, but only had 1-0 lead to show for it.

The first sight at goal came in the sixth minute as Rolph broke clear on the left and burst into the box but his toe-poke past the keeper was cleared.

Clacton’s first opportunity came through Harry McDonald in the 15th minute, but Stutes keeper Sam Roach was more than equal to the effort.

A good run by Histon’s Dan Brown down the left led to his cross taking a deflection on the way through and when Simon Swinton squared the ball back across, Matt Green fired over the bar.

The deadlock was broken in the 24th minute when a clearance was put back in the box by Swinton, and York beat the offside trap and improvised to get his head to the ball to lob Clacton keeper Joe Fowler.

Histon’s best chance for the remainder of the half came through some ingenuity from Danny Gould, who nutmegged a defender to break into the box but his effort was deflected wide at the front post.

The hosts did have Roach to thank for going into the break in the lead.

A through ball saw Clacton’s Kyelan Marvell get in behind the defence, but Roach was off his line quickly to smother the shot and deny the visitors an equaliser.

At the start of the second half, Rolph had a good chance to double Histon’s lead, but after doing well to get into the box, he blazed his effort over the bar.

But Rolph did have his goal 12 minutes later.

A good ball down the line by Swinton set Brown free, and he squared the ball in the box for Rolph to sidefoot home.

Roach had to be alert to deny Max Booth in the 78th minute, and then, seven minutes later, Gould added the crowning glory to Histon’s win.

Gould broke down the left and cut inside, and from 25 yards unleashed an unstoppabDunle drive into the top corner.

It was a well-deserved win for Histon, who maintain their place at the top of the table.
