Histon lose grip on Division One summit after defeat to Cambridge St Giles

Histon’s (243) status as Onyx League Division One leaders proved to be short lived after they lost by 34 runs to Cambridge St Giles (277-7 declared) at the weekend.

Ben Leach’s charges soared to the top of the table last time out with a five-point advantage over second-placed Ramsey.

However, this home defeat has seen them drop back down the runner-up spot with a gap of 13 points to the side that they had previously usurped.

Zaheer Hussain was the pick of the batting line-up for St Giles as he hit two sixes on his way to a score of 80 from 117 balls.

James Gillespie (68) also helped himself to a half century alongside a useful knock of 40 from Vansh Bajaj.

In terms of the bowling, Histon shared the wickets around with John Turner recording figures of 2-57, while Thomas Godfrey-Faussett, Leach, Henry Wilson and Felix Jebb all snared a wicket apiece.

Former Histon captain Ed Hyde spearheaded the run chase with his unbeaten knock of 74 from 111 deliveries, but ultimately he ran out of partners.

Histon will aim to bounce back on Saturday (10 August) at home against Southhill Park, while fourth-placed St Giles are set to entertain Eaton Socon on the same day.

Meanwhile, Burwell & Exning (207) were forced to settle for a draw during their home Onyx League Division One encounter with Eaton Socon (190-7).

Batting first after skipper Paul Summerskill won the toss, the home side were ticking along in positive fashion on a score of 185-5 after 49.4 overs – thanks in part to opener Simon Donald, who top scored with 84 runs.

However, Burwell & Exning were only able to add a total of 22 more runs for their final five wickets to leave them on a score of a shade more than 200.

Yet, the hosts’ bowlers managed to keep the opposition at bay with the trio of Joshua Vowden (2-42), Ben Kelly (2-34) and Nic Huckle (2-13) all taking two wickets each to ensure that Eaton Socon reached their allotted 54 overs short of the required target for victory.

Sixth-placed Burwell & Exning will be on their travels on Saturday (10 August) away at Blunham.

The hosts are two positions below their visitors in the standings with an 86-point deficit.
