Histon win through against Ramsey in battle of Onyx League Division One’s top two teams
Histon (160-6) kept the Onyx League Division One title race alive with a four-wicket victory at table-topping Ramsey on Saturday (156).
Ben Leach’s second-placed side made the trip to Cricketfield Lane armed with the knowledge that a defeat would see their hosts open up a comfortable lead at the summit.
However, after a successful chase, Histon have cut the gap between the two teams to just 17 points with plenty of matches remaining.
After captain Leach won the toss and opted to field first, his decision was vindicated as Histon went on to take wickets at regular intervals.
Oscar Fry (3-21) accounted for Ramsey’s top three batsmen, while Malik Ahmer (3-32) also made a useful contribution. There was also a wicket apiece for John Turner and Thomas Godfrey-Faussett, while the latter and skipper Leach also were accurate to record run outs.
Cameron Mitchell’s knock of 29 runs at the top of the order provided Histon with some solid foundations during their reply before overseas star Dan Cummins came in top score with a half century. The Australian eventually fell for a patient 56 runs from 91 deliveries.
Former captain Ed Hyde also weighed in with an important 27 runs, followed by Godfrey-Faussett, who was unbeaten at the crease on 14 when the winning runs were struck.
Histon will aim to keep up the pressure on the leaders on Saturday (20 July) when they play host to fifth-placed Wisbech Town.
A knock of 75 not out from captain Paul Summerskill guided Burwell & Exning (188-5) to a five-wicket victory at Old Leysians (187-8) last weekend.
Having initially been inserted into the field, Ben Kelly (4-61) and Dylan Hardy (3-21) were the pick of the Burwell & Exning bowling attack against the Onyx League Division One’s basement side.
And then it was over to skipper Summerskill, who came in with his side on 17-2 to produce his match-winning exploits.
He hit 11 fours during his time at the crease, with Nic Huckle offering plenty of support before he was dismissed on 63 runs from 100 deliveries.
Burwell & Exning will host Saffron Walden II on Saturday (20 July).
Vansh Bajaj’s heroics with the bat and ball were not quite enough to get Cambridge St Giles (175) over the winning line during their trip to Saffron Walden II (158-9) at the weekend.
After top scoring with 65 runs during St Giles’ innings, Bajaj went on to record figures of 5-24 from 13 overs.
However, St Giles were unable to completely bowl out their hosts and they ultimately had to settle for a draw.
St Giles will be in Onyx League Division One action at home to Blunham on Saturday (20 July).
