Youngsters from five primary schools across the area were given a hockey masterclass at The Leys School.

The Year 5 and 6 pupils from Newnham Croft, St Albans, Foxton, Park Street and St Paul’s attended the first Hockey Hub session at the school.

They received expert tuition from sports staff Damien Rigden, Patrick Miller and Darrel Cassidy, assisted by Hannah Sallows-Reiter, Dale Bean and Maddie Anthony from The Leys’ first-team squad, and Rio Olympic gold medallist Helen Richardson-Walsh.

She provided an inspirational talk and showed the young players her gold medal, tweeting afterwards that it had been “fantastic” to see the Hockey Hub in action.

The free coaching sessions will be held on the Astroturf pitch at the school every Thursday afternoon during term-time, with 22 youngsters taking part in week one; and the number of participants is expected to rise.
