Cambridge Taekwondo win seven medals at the ITF Taekwondo World Cup in Slovenia
Cambridge Taekwondo led the way for English clubs at last month’s ITF Taekwondo World Cup in Slovenia.
In terms of numbers Cambridge were one of the smallest teams to feature at the event, yet that did not stop them from returning home with seven medals.
There were double gold medals for both lead instructor Mirfet Hassan-Spiller and Niall Nevin in the sparring and patterns, while another of the club’s lead instructors – Jyothish Bhai – won a gold in patterns and a silver in sparring.
Fifteen-year-old junior member Lulu Harding, who attends The Perse School, excelled in the sparring and earned a bronze medal.
Hassan-Spiller said: “There were some great skills and courage from all the competitors and Lulu got through five very tough rounds of sparring to succeed in securing a bronze medal.”
Meanwhile, 13-year-old fellow Perse pupil Rebecca Alexander showed she has a bright future by finishing fifth of 49 competitors in the 12-14 black tag division.
“Rebecca did phenomenally well. She was the youngest in the category and against much taller opponents, this was an incredible achievement. She has serious spring on her,” added Hassan-Spiller.
