Cambridge United attacker Isabella Simmons scores four goals in first victory of the season over Chesham United
Cambridge United’s four-goal hero Isabella Simmons admitted that she was ‘on top of the world’ after Sunday’s 6-1 win over Chesham United.
The U’s went into the clash at the Premier Plus Stadium in St Neots having lost their opening two matches of the FA Women's National League Division One South East season – as well as a cup tie at the hands of Northampton Town.
However, they got off the mark in emphatic fashion against Chesham, with Simmons firing in four of the goals.
The attacker said: “After the second (goal), I knew I wanted the third so I was a little bit greedier.
“And then after the fourth, you’re on top of the world and I felt like I could get more and more.
“I’m glad I’ve finally got a hat-trick – it’s my first for United – and I’m buzzing.”
Putting her goalscoring exploits to one side, Simmons was impressed by the ‘resilience’ that United showed after a difficult start to the campaign.
She added: “Resilience is everything, especially at this level.
“The girls went into this game thinking that it’s a fresh day and a fresh game.
“We wanted to try our best, show some resilience and that we can bounce back from anything – we did exactly that.”
It was a sentiment shared by her manager Darren Marjoram, who added: “The resilience sometimes comes from the character but also just being in those situations.
“The start of the season hasn’t been the easiest – people would acknowledge that – but out of that comes tougher characters and we feel like we’re starting to get there with them.
“They’re showing exactly what we want and it’s important that we’ve got that within ourselves.
“It’s about trusting that group that’s out there – they know they have my full backing.”
United will return to action on Sunday (8 September) when they travel to face London Seaward, who like Marjoram’s side have won one of their opening three league matches.
