But it is another defeat for Shelford

Isaia Barbieri’s try proved crucial for Cantabrigian as they earned a 22-19 win over South Woodham Ferrers in London League 2NE.

Woodham struck first, touching down after a quick tap penalty and also adding the conversion with 10 minutes on the clock.

Danny Richards landed a penalty for Cantabs, and they took the lead when Richard Knight put in Finn Morrison for his first try of the season. Richards’ conversion gave them a 10-7 lead.

They had extended their lead to 17-7 by half time as Adam Fastnedge’s break was finished off by Drew Tilley by the posts, with Richards landing the extras.

Woodham got an unconverted try at the start of the second half to reduce the arrears.

Cantabs regained their 10-point advantage with 15 minutes remaining as a maul carried them over the line, and Barbieri grounded the ball.

With both teams having a player sent to the sin bin, Woodham’s scrum-half touched down and they also landed the conversion to make it 22-19.

But with some resolute defence, Cantabs saw out the win.

Shelford lost 29-22 to Bedford Athletic in London & SE Premier.

Harry Rogerson scored two tries and Fred Betteridge got one, while Lewis Cracknell kicked seven points.
