Jack Biard’s late try earned Shelford a bonus point in a 33-11 win over Brentwood in London League 1N.

It was a great start to the game as Lewis Cracknell landed a penalty for the hosts inside the first minute and he made it 6-0 to Shelford after five minutes.

With the wind at their backs, Shelford were penning Brentwood deep in their own half, with the visitors not making it into their opponents’ territory until the 20th minute.

Cracknell kicked another penalty for Shelford in the 26th minute, by which point a Brentwood player had been sin-binned. But Brentwood got three points themselves on the half-hour.

The first try came in the 34th minute, with Miles Huppatz running through to finish an attacking line-out. Cracknell’s conversion made it 16-3.

The visitors got the final points of the half as it finished 16-6.

Brentwood received a second yellow card in the 55th minute, and while they were down to 14, Shelford got their second try. Charlie Baker made the initial break, and Biard used his pace to cross the line.

Matt Gregerson was sin-binned for Shelford in the 64th minute, and Brentwood used the numerical advantage to bundle over for an unconverted try to make it 21-11.

In the 79th minute, Shelford turned over possession to set Louie Tang away to score, and Cracknell’s extras made it 28-11.

The bonus point try came in the 80th minute through Biard, and it sealed a 33-11 win to keep Shelford just three points behind leaders Sudbury.

Shelford are at home to third-from-bottom Norwich this Saturday (February 5).

Lew Jones touched down and Finlay Laing converted in a 31-7 defeat for Cantabrigian at Chelmsford in 2NE.
