Joe Ironside and Liam O'Neil fired Cambridge United to an historic first win at Fratton Park with a 2-1 victory over Portsmouth in Sky Bet League One.

United were rock solid in defence as they earned their first away win of the campaign.

The hosts had the majority of possession in the first half without creating any clear-cut chances, and it was the U's that took the lead in the 38th minute.

Shilow Tracey and George Williams combined on the right, with the latter delivering a cross that was headed across goal and into the far corner by Ironside for his fifth goal in six League One matches.

May went close to making it 2-0 for United, but was denied with a 30-yard effort by Portsmouth keeper Gavin Bazunu before half time.

However, they doubled their lead in the 69th minute

Portsmouth failed to deal with Adam May's corner, and O'Neil dispatched a wondrous volley into the net.

The hosts were desperate to avoid a third league defeat in a row, and pulled a goal back through Ronan Curtis' fiercely-struck shot from a tight angle in the 76th minute.

But United stood firm and rode out seven additional minutes of injury time to seal their third league victory of the season.

The U's are back in action on Tuesday night (September 21) against Tottenham Hotspur under-21s in the EFL Trophy.
