Josh Smith shines as Cambridgeshire defeat Northumberland in Unicorns MCCA Championship

Josh Smith and Rob Sayer bowled Cambridgeshire to a 50-run win over Northumberland in the Unicorns MCCA Championship, Eastern Division.

Their second win of the season was teed up in the first innings by Waqas Hussain and Smith.

Opener Hussain struck 113 and Smith made 101 as, together with Eddie Ballard’s 64, they reached 315 for 3.

Callum Guest also offered a half-century (51) as Cambs ended their innings on 401 for 7.

Michael Richardson offered a lone charge for Northumberland in reply making 155 of his side’s 262 all out. Sam Rippington was the pick of the Cambs’ bowlers with five for 90, while Mark Edwards took three for 65.

Cambs’ second innings saw Guest make 66 and Smith hit 56 as they amassed 187 all out.

It left them defending a total of 326 on the final day.

Northumberland made a good fist of their response, but they were eventually bowled out for 276.

Smith had figures of four for 110 and Sayer took three for 53.

Cambs are now third in the table with 74 points, 26 behind leaders Norfolk, with Staffordshire 16 clear in second.

They complete their season with a home game against Hertfordshire at Saffron Walden, starting on Sunday, September 1.
