Kieran Dolaghan landed a penalty to earn Cantabrigian a 15-13 win over Wanstead in London League 2NE.

They started the game well as Adam Fastnedge made good ground on the left before passing to Matt Houlden to get the opening try after 10 minutes.

Wanstead hit back through a penalty, and then took the lead after the pressure of a series of 10m scrums eventually told as they got a converted try.

Cantabs regained the lead before the break though.

Scrum-half Will McFadyen dummied to move the ball right and then switched play back outside for a charging Tom Stace, who found a gap to round the defence to touch down by the posts. Dolaghan converted to make it 12-10.

Wanstead started the better of the two sides in the second half, and kicked an early penalty to make it 13-12.

It was Dolaghan’s penalty from 40 metres that proved telling though, giving them a 15-13 hard-fought win.

Cantabs now have a week off before making the trip to Norwich on January 26.

Meanwhile, in London & SE Premier, Shelford suffered a 74-0 defeat at leaders Wimbledon.

It gets no easier for Shelford as they host third-placed Westcliff this Saturday (January 19).
