Cambridge Kodiaks chalk up big victory over Oxford Midnight Stars in Women's National Ice Hockey League 2 encounter
The Cambridge Kodiaks chalked up a comprehensive 12-0 victory over Oxford Midnight Stars on Saturday evening.
The Kodiaks headed into the encounter at the Cambridge Ice Arena on the back of a defeat to Streatham Storm a fortnight earlier.
However, they responded in style at the weekend to pick up maximum points from the Women's National Ice Hockey League 2 encounter.
After a slow start, Cambridge broke the deadlock when Saara Karvonen picked up the first goal of the contest. Two goals from captain Christina Ashley then calmed the nerves before the first break.
The hosts were much quicker out of the gate in the second period, taking only one minute to add their fourth with Ashley completing her hat-trick and Karvonen adding a fifth goal.
An Oxford penalty saw Cambridge use the player advantage well, as Joa Hoshizaki notched her first Kodiaks goal on the powerplay.
Ashley then added her fourth of the evening, before Hoshizaki claimed her second of the night, despite Katie Goodwin being in the box for an elbowing penalty.
The third period saw more of the same, and when Oxford’s Sasha Webb was sat for slashing, Goodwin was able to atone for her earlier penalty, burying her maiden Kodiaks goal.
Clare Ledbury scored through traffic for her first goal since joining from Milton Keynes before Karvonen took her tally for the night to four with a quickfire brace.
Kodiaks will next be in action at home on December 9 for what will be a reverse fixture against Streatham.
