Stutes braced for Newmarket challenge

Lance Key is preparing for a benchmark game for Histon this Saturday, when they travel to third-placed Newmarket Town in the Thurlow Nunn League, Premier Division.

The Stutes bounced back from two successive defeats with a 1-0 home win over Hadleigh United last weekend, with captain Max York heading the only goal in the 68th minute.

“It was a good win after two defeats,” said manager Key. “The lads responded superbly.

“We deserved to win the game and on the second-half performance, it should have been three or four.

“And a clean sheet is a good base to build on and if we keep getting them then we will win more than we lose.”

Felixstowe & Walton set the standard at the top of the division with 12 wins out of 13 games for 36 points, while Coggeshall are second with 27.

Newmarket are third with 24, two ahead of Histon, and Key believes that the current top three will be the ones to beat this campaign.

So Saturday will serve as a good test of Histon’s credentials.

“You have three teams at the top and if we can separate any of them at any point in the season, we will be there or thereabouts,” said Key. “This is the benchmark game.

“There are a group of us below the top three that are capable of breaking into it, but it’s the budget side of things that can stop you. If we can hang on to the coat-tails of the top three, then we have a chance.”
