Defender remains a doubt for U's

Greg Taylor will face a late fitness assessment before Cambridge United name their squad for the trip to Swindon Town on Saturday (September 30).

The centre-back suffered a head injury in the 2-1 defeat at Mansfield Town last Saturday, and was forced to sit out the 3-0 win over Forest Green Rovers on Tuesday night.

“It was a pretty big bump to the head on Saturday and he had a slight reaction early Monday morning so we had to be careful on Tuesday,” said U’s head coach Shaun Derry.

“It will be right until the dying embers of Friday afternoon or Saturday morning to decide if he can be available or not.”

But George Taft proved an able deputy, slotting into the back four with ease.

“I thought George came in and gave a really accomplished display, which is great for him and great for us,” said Derry.

“We don’t want to be rushing Greg back just for the sake of one game. At the same time, it gives George that opportunity to keep the shirt and that’s what we’re trying to promote within the group.

“When that opportunity does come, you fight tooth and nail to keep it and George has given himself a great chance after Tuesday’s display.”
