Late try breaks Eastern Counties hearts against East Midlands

Defeat in Bill Beaumont County Championships opener

A late try sent Eastern Counties to a 24-21 defeat to East Midlands in the Bill Beaumont County Championships.

Shane Moynihan’s try and a Simon Hrbek’s conversion gave Eastern Counties the lead after five minutes.

Lutui Aleki and Josh Walker touched down to make it 10-7 to East Midlands, but Ashley Elvers’ try and Hrbek’s conversion made it 14-10 to Eastern Counties at half time.

After the break, Steve Hipwell touched down and Hrbek landed a third conversion.

But tries from Aleki and Carl Burgess completed East Midlands’ win, with Stefan Jones landing two conversions.

Eastern Counties host Lancashire at Cambridge University’s Grange Road this Saturday, kick off 2.15pm.
