Burwell & Exning stay top of Onyx League Division One table after victory against Old Leysians
Burwell & Exning (213-7) maintained their grip on top spot in the Onyx League Division One with a three-wicket victory at Old Leysians (210).
Batting first, captain Andrew Gale (58) top scored for hosting Old Leysians with a half century.
However, it was the bowling performance of Burwell & Exning’s Josh Arksey (5-43) that caught the eye as he snared a five-for.
Opener Nick Jones (40) and overseas all-rounder Tom Mangelsen (33) both made useful contributions during the run chase, but once again it was skipper Paul Summerskill that guided his side to victory.
The wicket-keeper finished unbeaten on 65 runs from 88 deliveries alongside Edward Manning (8 not out).
Burwell & Exning, who are 11 points clear of second-placed Saffron Walden after seven matches, will play host to Histon at Mingay Park on Saturday (7 June).
Elsewhere, Foxton Granta (94-9) dug in to record a draw during Saturday’s Onyx League Division One encounter at home against Eaton Socon (247-8).
With wickets falling at regular intervals during their run chase, it appeared that Foxton Granta were on course for a third defeat of the season.
But they held on to record six points from the encounter, while visiting Eaton Socon left with 17 points to show for their efforts.
Having been inserted into the field by their visitors, Ravi Mahendra (3-39) was the pick of the Foxton Granta bowling attack.
Sam Beer (2-37), Ash Clark (1-46) and Max Sargentina (1-61) also snared wickets, while Tom Banks top scored for Eaton Socon with a total of 92 runs before he was run out by Adam Webster.
In reply, seven members of the Foxton Granta batting line-up were dismissed for single figure scores.
Johnny Atkinson top scored with 17, while it was the combination of captain Lewys Hill (11 not out) and Beer (10 not out) that soaked up the remaining deliveries to avoid the loss.
The draw has seen Foxton Granta drop to fifth in the table ahead of their trip to face ninth-placed Upwood on Saturday (7 June).
And that is followed on Sunday by another meeting with Eaton Socon – this time in the final Cambridgeshire & Norfolk round of the Voneus National Village Cup – at the Terry Day Cricket Ground.
Meanwhile, Histon (107) suffered a fourth defeat of the 2025 campaign in Division One of the Onyx League after going down by 122 runs away at Saffron Walden (229-7).
Captain Ben Leach (5-52) was the star with the ball for Histon as he registered a five-for, but nobody was able to match those exploits with the bat.
Leach went on to also be the top scorer in doomed run chase with 29, while Seb Harrison contributed a further 25.
Histon will travel to Mingay Park on Saturday (7 June) to do battle with league-leading Burwell & Exning.
A century from Kunal Dabas helped Cambridge St Giles (202-9) to record a draw from their home Onyx League Division One encounter with visiting Wisbech Town (249-9) at the weekend.
While wickets fell on a regular basis, Dabas offered up some much needed resistance in the run chase.
He hit 13 fours on his way to a score of 106 from 139 deliveries, while James Gillespie and Ashok Singh both recorded scores of 32 as St Giles survived to pick up eight points from the contest.
Earlier in the afternoon visiting Wisbech batted first after winning the toss – and it was Singh that caught the eye for St Giles as he recorded bowling figures of 3-58 alongside Chris Germon (3-56).
St Giles, who are eighth in the Division One standings, will hit the road on Saturday (7 June) to lock horns with Ramsey.
The home side go into the fixture sitting fourth in the table with four wins from seven outings.
Sawston & Babraham II (177-8) played out a draw with Ramsey (240-8) last weekend in Division One of the Onyx League.
Having opted to bowl first after winning the toss, the hosting Rams went on to share the wickets around.
Tarun Mouli (2-45) and Miguel-Angelo Machado (2-58) both snared two apiece, while Darcy Murphy, Jaykishan Plaha and Julius Jackson all took one each.
Meanwhile, Machado (54) went on to impress during the run chase alongside captain Dan Heath, who finished unbeaten on 64 off only 63 balls.
Sawston & Babraham’s second string will return to action on Saturday (7 June) when they travel to face Blunham.
