Centre-back extends U's stay

Leon Legge has signed a contract extension at Cambridge United.

The 31-year-old centre-back has become a firm favourite at the Cambs Glass Stadium since joining from Gillingham in the summer of 2015.

He won numerous player-of-the-season awards last year, and has made 59 appearances for the U’s, scoring six times, and was handed the captain’s armband earlier this season.

And he has now triggered an extension in his contract to June 2018.

“I’m really pleased to have been able to extend my time here, because I have settled in quickly and love playing my football at Cambridge United,” said Legge.

“Although I have only been at the club for a year and a half, I feel like I’ve been here for four or five years. My family have settled well in the city too, so we are all enjoying life in Cambridge.

“My aims remain on achieving team accolades at this club. Every footballer wants to win and having previously won promotion at another club, I would love the chance to do the same thing here.”

And U’s manager Shaun Derry said: “We are all delighted that Leon has activated a part of his contract that allows him to represent Cambridge United for a longer period.

“He is a big game player and a great character for us. He has a good knowledge of this level and understands his roles and responsibilities.

“Leon’s consistent performances over the past year have earned him a hard core following of supporters, who like to see him play the ‘Leon Legge’ way.

“He is an extremely reliable individual both on and off the pitch.”
