First-half dismissal for keeper is costly for Lilywhites

A red card for Liam Gooch proved costly for Cambridge City as they lost 2-1 to Didcot Town in the Evo-Stik League South, Division One Central.

The Lilywhites made the perfect start in Oxfordshire, with James Hall pouncing on a loose ball in the area to fire into the bottom corner after eight minutes.

City were good value for their lead until the half-hour mark when keeper Gooch was dismissed.

He lost control of the ball on the edge of the area, presenting it to Didcot’s Morgan Williams and in an attempt to stop the striker tapping into an empty net, wrestled him to the ground, giving the referee no option but to show a red card.

With no substitute keeper, centre-back Joe Robinson had to take over in goal.

Didcot equalised on the hour through Aaron Woodley, and they got their winner from the spot through Williams after a handball in the area.

City are at home to Brightlingsea Regent in the FA Cup this Saturday (September 8).
