Cambridge City manager Jamie Cureton wants to put on a show in first match at the FWD-IP Community Stadium in Sawston against Tilbury

Manager Jamie Cureton has challenged his Cambridge City players to make Saturday’s clash with Tilbury ‘extra special for everyone’.

The Isthmian League North Division encounter is geared up to be a momentous day for the club as they end an 11-year spell without a stadium of their own.

Cureton – along with the majority of the playing squad – only arrived in the summer, and so he has missed most of the tough times since the closure at Milton Road in 2013.

And it is for those that have stuck by the club that Cureton is determined to put on a show for at the FWD-IP Community Stadium this weekend.

He said: “It’s a huge day and it’s something I’ve been asked about constantly since I took the job. It’s going to be a big occasion for me and the players, but we’re new to it in lots of ways.

“It’s a massive occasion for all of the people that have been with the club through the last 11 years – and before that as well.

“Kevin (Satchell, chairman) and his family, the board, the fans, all of the former players and managers – they’ve had to go through a lot of heartache.

“This match should be dedicated to all of them because the players and I know we’re reaping the benefit of their hard work.

“Our job is to make it extra special for everyone with a good performance and hopefully the right result as well.

“We don’t want to let anyone down and there will be added pressure, so it’s down to us to handle that. For me as a manager, the day probably won’t feel complete unless we can top it with a win.

“But just to be in the ground with fans old and new, it’s going to be a big day and we’ll need to be prepared right as a team.”

Attacking midfielder Jack Thompson is set to miss the encounter with a hamstring injury suffered in the 4-2 win at Witham Town last weekend.

In more positive news, goalkeeper James Philp could make his first appearance for the club having suffered a broken finger during a training session shortly after his arrival from higher-league AFC Sudbury. New additions Tom Richardson and Jamie Dicks are also in line to feature.
