Cambridge City win fourth straight Isthmian League North Division game against Heybridge Swifts
Cambridge City racked up a fourth Isthmian League North Division win in a row on Saturday with a 3-2 home victory over Heybridge Swifts.
After triumphs at the expense of Grays Athletic, Redbridge and Sporting Bengal United, the home clash against the Swifts looked to be City’s toughest assignment in recent outings with the visitors on the fringes of the play-offs.
However, in front of a crowd of 828 at the FWD/IP Community Stadium, City came out on top courtesy of goals from George Smith, new signing Ramiah Mills and Jayden Gipson.
“In the last month we’ve been really good,” said City manager Jamie Cureton. “It’s no coincidence that we’ve had everyone back fit.
“It was a tough game. Heybridge are up there, just one point outside of the play-offs and they’ve been on a really good run – they’re a tough team to play against.
“We just needed to attack it and take the Boxing Day win (against Sporting Bengal) into it.
“It’s a massive three points for us. It shows what we’re about, our character and what we can do.”
One major positive for Cureton was the instant impression made by recent arrival Mills – both with his performance and his celebration.
Despite having only arrived 24 hours earlier from Basildon United, Mills was put straight into the starting line-up and the attacker caught the eye with a goal from Jayden Randell’s cross that put City 2-1 up, which was followed by a back flip to mark the moment.
“We’ve thrown Millsy in even though he only joined yesterday,” added Cureton.
“He doesn’t really know anyone but sometimes it’s better off throwing him in and him getting used to everyone and everyone getting used to him.
“He put in a good shift, came up with a goal and I’m pretty sure he’ll be a good signing for us and I’m sure everyone will enjoy him doing back flips!
“I said to him the more back flips you’re doing the better you’re doing, so I’m buzzing with that.
“I’m sure he’ll be someone that the fans like – he’s a likable guy. He works hard and hopefully he’ll get us a few more goals.”
City, who have scored 12 goals during their ongoing run of winning form, will go in search of a fifth straight victory on New Year’s Day when they play host to Mildenhall Town.
The 11th-placed Lilywhites won the reverse fixture in late August by a 3-1 margin with goals from Harry Phillips, Gipson and Smith.
